Because April and I are so health conscience food-wise, ahem, we went to Jack in the Box for lunch the other day. While pulling up to the drive-thru, we saw a homeless man enter the restaurant...therefore not within our reach - or earshot - to get him some bucks and a Bible right then and there. But...
In the line, I asked April to grab one of our "packets" out of the glove compartment, and upon receipt of our "health" food, we swung around to the front to find...the man's bike, but no man. He had left his bicycle outside the restaurant, but had a sort of tip jar with "anything helps" written on it taped to his handlebars.
I thought it was a pretty decently brilliant move on his part and took full advantage of it by putting a shirt-pocket New Testament Bible complete with a couple bucks inside that there cup. Tip jar...filled.
As I got back into the car, April said that the man had watched me through the window. And as we turned out of the lot and up to the light, we could see him walk over to his bike.
Our hope is that the $2 repaid him for his meal...and that the Bible provides him with more than just a great book to read on those cold streets, but something that he can learn to live by.
A warmth no amount of cold can tame.
